How to help your dog from crying at night

You may be upset by the crying sessions of the first few nights. You feel very helpless and somehow to blame. This is a perfectly natural occurrence–nearly all puppies cry when they sleep alone in a new home for the first time. They miss the warmth and companionship of their mother and litter mates.

Try to make up for this lack by providing something warm for the pup to snuggle up to. Try letting the puppy cuddle up to a hot-water bottle wrapped in a terry towel. Fill it about two-thirds full of slightly hotter than lukewarm water.

An electric heating pad can also be used, but these are safe only when the connecting wire can be buried under the bedding so securely that it cannot be chewed. The ticking of an alarm clock placed near the puppy’s bed may help to ease his lonely feeling.
