Arthritis: A major concern in old pets
Arthritis (usually noticed as a stiffening of the rear legs) and other degenerative bone disease is seen in many old pets. There is no cure for arthritis, so treatment is directed at relieving pain and making the dog more comfortable. Some dogs will show mild intermittent stiffness or lameness, while others experience much more pain and discomfort. Your veterinarian can prescribe pain-relieving medication. Don’t leave your dog outside very long when it’s very cold, and keep him off damp surfaces, which aggravate the condition.
